There are hundreds of studies on the therapeutic effects of creative writing. When we write to make sense of our experiences, we reclaim some measure of agency. When we write, we remain protagonists in our lives. Creative writing encourages people to choose their words, metaphors and images. Studies suggest that this creative decision-making can lead to increased self-awareness and self-esteem and improved mental health.
